resource for teachers is now in demand not only in
classrooms around Australia but by public servants,
lobbyists and public relations firms as well.
The Parliament Stack is a comprehensive
computer-based collection of readily accessible
information about Senators, Members of the House of
Representatives and Members' electorates developed
by the Parliamentary Education Office in Canberra
in association with Interactive Multimedia Pty Ltd.
The program supports parliamentary and citizenship
education across a broad range of curriculum areas
in primary, secondary and tertiary education, and
provides those with interests in federal parliament
with a convenient source of a broad range of
information unavailable from any other single
source.
The Parliament Stack is now being
maintained and distributed commercially by
Interactive Multimedia Pty Ltd on behalf of the
Parliamentary Education Office, with over 3,500
users throughout Australia. A post 1998 election
version is now available for Power Macintosh and
Windows 95 (and above) on CD ROM.

Society for Educational Technology: one for most
outstanding computer-based learning material, and

Project Description
Prime Ministers of Australia is a
cross-platform interactive CD ROM developed for use
in Australian primary and secondary schools by
Interactive Multimedia Pty Ltd for the National
Museum of Australia and the Parliamentary Education
Office. The program provides a structure to review
major issues and events in Australia's political
history since Federation, using the Prime Minister
of a particular period as a focus for a range of
contemporary sources (film, sound, photographs,
cartoons, newspaper articles, and so on) to provide
evidence of the history of the time.
Users of the program can select a particular Prime
Minister by name or photograph and be presented
with a thumbnail sound documentary outlining the
major issues and events during the time (or times)
in office of that Prime Minister. When the audio is
finished, the user may then choose to explore the
sources at greater length.
The program was distributed free to schools
throughout Australia in February 1996. An updated
version with search and printing routines was produced in
2000.

Project Description
Exploring the Nardoo is an imaginary
inland river environment on CD ROM for grade 8 to
10 school students to explore, maintain and
improve. Students can explore the ecology of this
imaginary environment through four physical regions
and across four time zones using a captivating and
comprehensive set of multimedia resources. They can
visit the Water Research Centre and join the
research staff in an investigation of their
choice.
There are simulations to run, tools to measure the
quality of the water in the river, newspapers and
reports to read, audio reports to listen to and
video reports to watch. Findings and solutions can
be gathered and presented using the powerful
features of an interactive multimedia note
book.
Exploring the Nardoo was developed by the
Interactive Multimedia Learning Laboratory in the
Faculty of Education at the University of
Wollongong in Australia, in collaboration with the
New South Wales state Department of Land and Water
Conservation.
Awards
Exploring the Nardoo has won four major awards
and been nominated as Best New Educational Software
by the Software Publishers Association. A tribute
to its leadership over an ever-growing number of
flashy and over-promoted shallow commercial titles,
the Nardoo continues to impress those who take the
time to review it thoroughly and understand its
engagement and rich content.
Winner,
Computer - Category I Award (Computer-based
materials designed for independent learning, open
learning or guided self study), Australian Society
for Educational Technology Awards 1966. The ASET
judges called it an "Excellent Package!", praising
its "great depth of information, good use of
metaphor for navigation, [and] excellent
match between constructivist approach and learner
centred control." They also though the Personal
Digital Assistant was "an excellent tool ... [
for]... navigating, presenting information, and
a as a way of using information."
Winner,
Education 12-16 years, International EMMA Awards
1996. At the Frankfurt Book Fair this year, the
Commission of the European Communities and its
cosponsors the Interactive Multimedia Association,
KPMG, Macromedia and Yorkshire International
Thomson Multimedia gave the Nardoo its 1996
International EMMA Award for Excellence in the
category of Education 12-16 Years. The Awards
judges also nominated the Nardoo in the top three
for their own Interactivity Award. Although not the
winning nomination, the Nardoo was the only
education product among the three
nominations.
Rivercare
2000. The Department of Land and Water Conservation
from the New South Wales State government gave the
Nardoo an environmental Rivercare 2000 Gold Award -
for best product developed by a Tertiary
Institution. The Rivercare 2000 Accreditation and
Awards Program was created to recognise and
encourage community-minded individuals and groups
that participate in programs dedicated to achieving
clean, healthy and productive rivers by the year
2000. The Program is an initiative of the New South
Wales Government and administered by the New South
Wales state Department of Land and Water
Conservation. The inspiration for the Rivercare
2000 Program was the need for a united and positive
approach to overcoming the myriad of problems that
currently endanger the health of rivers in New
South Wales.
Best
Tertiary Production. The Nardoo was the 1996 winner
of the Australian Teachers of Media ATOM Australian
International Multimedia Award for Best Tertiary
Institution Production, co-sponsored by the
Australasian Interactive Multimedia Association
(AIMIA).
